Country Spotlight: Kenya

Country Spotlight: Kenya image
Country Spotlight session, from aef2020 during the Digital Energy Festival.
Part of the Country Spotlight series: Kenya remains one of the most attractive investment destinations on the continent and a world leader in geothermal development. This panel features many of Kenya’s high-level decision-makers from the Ministry of Energy, Kenya Power, Kenya Electricity Generating Company (KenGen) and The Office of the President, will present insights into the current energy landscape and their new energy aspirations.

Digitisation has proved to be both a mitigator and an enricher for Kenya’s energy sector this year, as the country looks to offset COVID-19 challenges in tandem with digital transformation and power diversification efforts. In an attempt to ensure not just access, but effective management of power at such a critical time, the country’s key enablers and operators have enacted a population-first philosophy. Kenya Power’s MD and CEO, Bernard Ngugi emphasised to this end that the products at the company’s disposal are being developed to facilitate this ease of management among customers.

“The leveraging of technology has become so handy when working for our customers, particularly enabling them to be able to make their payments so easily.” This is epitomised by the development and launch of an app that has already connected 7.7 million customers in the country at present. In agreement regarding the significance of technology to boost energy literacy and ease, as much as energy access, is Joshua Choge, Chairman of the Board of Directors at KenGen. He added: “We have to continuously improve the use of technology in running our processes and systems, and are piloting the Internet of Things at a geothermal plant complex to advance the use of renewable energy.”

This joins a host of projects – exploring additional renewable efforts such as hydrogen, battery storage and off-grid, and offshore wind - courtesy of the country’s key protagonists at both private and public level to elevate power capacity, power access, power management and digital innovation, simultaneously.
