Ms Nomfundo Maseti holds a BA Hon degree in Economics. She started her career teaching economics and business economics for three years. She joined the Competition Commission wherein she held various positions including serving as a Senior Economist and had an opportunity to regulate conduct of various corporates in South Africa through undertaking major investigations pertaining to price fixing and abuse of dominance with great success.
She has extensive knowledge of industrial economics, regulatory economics and economics of competition law and consumer law which are imperative in the sustainable development and regulation of the piped gas industry. Part of her role in the Department of Trade and Industry where she served as a Chief Director, was to formulate policy and regulations in the area of competition, corporate and consumer. She piloted a number of various policy and legislation through Cabinet and Parliament, notably,
• Competition Policy (refined policy) and Competition Amendment Act of 2010
• Consumer Protection Act including associated regulations (2009)
• Companies Amendment Bill (Rectification Bill in 2010)
• Estate Agency Policy framework and Draft Amendment Bill (2009 and 2010)
Ms Maseti previously served as a Board Member at the National Gambling Board, and as a member of e-Commerce Committee and as a member of SADC Competition and Consumer Committee.
In November 2010, Ms Maseti joined NERSA as the Executive Manager for Piped Gas Regulation. In this role, she provided appreciable leadership in the development and finalisation of the Competition Assessment and the Maximum Price Methodology paving way for NERSA to exercise its regulatory powers in approving maximum gas prices.
