The African Development Bank (AfDB) is a multilateral institution that promotes sustainable development in Africa. It is the premier financial development institution of Africa, engaged in mobilizing resources towards the economic and social progress of its 53 Regional Member Countries (RMCs).
The AfDB provides a range of financial products without sovereign guarantees to compliment its traditional lending operations to governments with sovereign guarantees. Private sector operations of the Bank Group promote strong social and corporate governance standards as well as help African companies achieve international best practices, making them more competitive at home and in the international marketplace.
The AfDB adopted a two-pronged approach to formulate the NEPAD plan of action for infrastructure, involving the launch of a Short Term Action Plan (STAP) based essentially on projects and programs already identified by RECs and the preparation of a Medium to Long Term Strategic Framework (MLTSF) that would articulate strategies, prioritize programs and form partnerships that can best promote economic integration and support the development of trade.
