GVEP was launched at the WSSD in Johannesburg in August 2002. The Partnership promotes innovative approaches to increasing energy access to contribute to the achievement of the MDGs. Since 2002, GVEP has been working in a number of developing countries to support national governments with their energy action plans and has encouraged a cross-sectoral approach to energy. GVEP International, the UK-based charitable organisation set up by GVEP in 2006, is working today with a wide range of Partners to put in place programmes to build and grow energy supply chains, stimulating local economic development and thereby reducing poverty in a viable and sustainable manner.
